The memory foam mattress is famous for its health benefits and comfort. Also, this bed is very durable compared to other mattresses. But you can help prolong your favorite memory foam mattress’s lifespan by knowing how to clean and maintain it.

Taking proper care of your mattress will expand its lifespan and give you a healthy sleep environment.

Since memory foam is a long-term investment, ensure you give your mattress a deep clean once every six months. In this guide, we’ve shared tips and tricks on how you can do it.

How to Clean a Memory Foam Mattress

How to Clean a Memory Foam Mattress

Your mattress absorbs dirt, moisture, dead skin, or debris, creating a perfect ambiance for dust mites. But you can make a hygienic sleep environment by giving it a deep clean.

Also, the memory foam material is different from others; thus, it is recommended to be extra careful while cleaning it.

Memory foam cannot absorb water, so avoid using water directly on the mattress.

However, cleaning your memory foam is very easy. You will need a couple of materials to clean your mattress.

  • Vacuum cleaner (upholstery)
  • Baking soda
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Laundry detergent
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Enzyme cleaner
  • Spray bottle
  • Clean, dry cloth or towel

Before cleaning your memory foam mattress, ensure you have all those ingredients. Well, let’s clean the mattress.

Vacuum the Mattress

As we mentioned above, the mattress can build up dust or mold. So, vacuuming can keep the bed fresh. Also, regular vacuuming removes odor from the mattress.

If your mattress has a stubborn odor, sprinkle some baking soda directly over the mattress. Allow it sits for 10-12 hours, then vacuum the bed. Baking soda is a great option for deodorizing mattresses.

Also, if you have pets at home, vacuuming is an effective way to remove pet hair, allergens, or any pollutants.

Cleaning Any Spill from the Mattress

Spillage accidents can occur anytime on your bed. If this happens, then try to clean it as quickly as possible. Damp the spill using a dry cloth but do not rub it. Otherwise, this will spread out the stain that can damage the foam.

Since memory foam cannot absorb moisture, blot the spills as much as possible. Then use baking soda and keep it there for 10 minutes. Baking soda is the fastest way to dry the moisturizing area.

When baking soda has dried up, vacuum it. If needed, repeat the process 2 or 3 times.

Remove Urine Stain from Memory foam mattress.

Although you take proper care of your mattress, there might still be a stain in the memory foam mattress.

For example, if you are someone who likes drinking tea and coffee in bed, an unwanted accident could occur. Or if you have kids, the most common is urine stain on the mattress.

If the stain gets dry, it will be tough to remove it. Hence, try to clean the affected area immediately. But how can you treat these stains?

If you have kids at home, chances are there is a urine stain on the mattress. To clean the urine stain, you will need baking soda, white vinegar, laundry detergent, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide. Mix these items, except baking soda, equally in a spray bottle.

Now, blot the urine with a dry cloth or towel. After blotting, sprinkle baking soda on the urine area and keep it for at least 6 hours to remove the urine odor.

After 6 hours:

  1. Vacuum the area and apply the solution to the stains.
  2. Allow the mixture to soak and dry.
  3. Again, vacuum the area.

This should remove urine stains. But if there is still a stain, then repeat the process.

On the other hand, to clean the coffee or tea stains, first, you need a dry cloth. Next, dampen the cloth with warm water and blot the stained area. Then you will need a solution of vinegar, liquid laundry soap, and laundry detergent.

Mix these ingredients and apply them to the stain. Let it sit for at least five minutes. After 5 minutes, use a wet cloth and remove the solution. This will remove the stain.

You can also follow the above processes to remove any blood stains from the mattress.

Baby Poop On Memory Foam Mattress? – Clean It Immediately

You may occasionally face a mess on your memory foam mattress if you are a parent. And since memory foam is not waterproof, it is essential to clean any excess immediately.

After removing the excess:

  1. Use a solution of white distilled vinegar and hot water.
  2. Spray the mixture onto the affected area and sit there until you see the spot is lightened.
  3. Use a dry cloth or towel to dry the area.
  4. Again, use an enzyme-cleaning solution on the affected area.

These are the most common and effective cleaning methods that you can try if your mattress gets dirty.

How To Maintain Your Memory Foam Mattress

Maintaining a mattress is the best way to prolong its lifespan. If you want to get a good night’s sleep, then you should maintain a clean routine. Here’s how you can care for your mattress.

  1. Rotate and flip the mattress every six months. This will keep your bed from any wear and tear.
  2. Use a mattress topper and cover to avoid any direct spills or stains on the bed.
  3. Place the mattress under sunlight often. When your mattress gets direct sunlight, this will protect your mattress from growing any mites.
